Students on campuses across the US are playing key roles in the Kleercut campaign. These students are organizing around the campaign and getting their campuses to send a clear message to Kimberly-Clark. As large educational institutions are increasingly deciding not to buy K-C products, the company will be forced to make an important decision: in order to regain consumer support, will it continue with ancient forest destruction or will it use recycled and FSC-certified fiber?
Students’ hard work on the Kleercut campaign has played a vital role in educating the public about Kimberly-Clark while generating some of the campaign’s best media stories. On December 14, after months of working with other students and his school’s administration, Kyle Saari and a group of students at Rice University highlighted their Kleercut Campaign victory. They delivered a 4-foot tall letter to K-C Board member, Marc Shapiro that confirmed the removal of Kleenex brand products from the Housing and Dining.
The students’ imaginative and eye-catching delivery was picked up by newspapers, television news programs and radio stations across the US and Canada. These newspapers—both online and print editions— included the Houston Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News, the Fort Worth Telegram, New York Newsday, The Globe and Mail (Canada), the Centre Daily Times (PA), as well as an AP story. Television stations covering the story included KTEN, KTRE, KLTV (all in Texas), and KSWO (in Oklahoma). The Pacifica affiliate in Houston featured an interview with Kyle during the evening news program.
