Kimberly-Clark: Part of the "Chain of Destruction"

Consuming the Boreal Forest

A new Greenpeace report reveals that American, Canadian and European corporations are fueling the destruction of the Boreal Forest. The report is a powerful reminder of the damage wrought by Kimberly-Clark’s unsustainable appetite for Boreal wood – and the importance of acting now to change it.

The report, Consuming Canada’s Boreal Forest: The Chain of Destruction from Logging Companies to Consumers, focuses on the provinces of Ontario and Quebec where forest products giants Abitibi-Consolidated, Bowater, Kruger, and SFK Pulp, are razing forests and trampling the rights of indigenous communities. In Ontario, less than nine percent of forests are protected. In Quebec, the situation is worse, with only five percent of forests shielded from industrial logging.

This underscores the importance of companies that use wood – like Kimberly-Clark—taking action to protect endangered forests. Unfortunately, Kimberly-Clark seems more interested in lip service than reforms to its unsustainable wood consumption.

For seventy years, Kimberly-Clark has gobbled wood from forests in Ontario, driving massive clearcutting and environmental degradation. That shameful tradition continues today as Kimberly-Clark turns endangered forests in Ontario’s largest forest management unit – the Kenogami – into disposal products to be flushed down the drain and dumped into landfills. Without a break in this chain of forest destruction, wildlife like the woodland caribou may be extirpated from the Kenogami.

Kimberly-Clark has the technology and market muscle to make tissue without wrecking watersheds and harming caribou.

Tell Kimberly-Clark to stop making excuses and start taking action to protect endangered Boreal forests.
